The Divine Axe Rhitta「神斧リッタ, Jinpu Ritta」 is a Sacred Treasure that was in the possession of the Lion's Sin of Pride, Escanor.

Appearance

Rhitta is a gigantic ornamental battle axe with a blade shaped like a crescent moon, similar to that of a Monk's spade. The axe also features two golden protrusions, one larger than the other, with the white tips of a spear, the longer one is in the middle at the top of the axe and the smaller one is on the opposite of the blade of the axe. The handle is dark blue and it features a golden semicircular guard with four golden spikes on it. Its design specs and distribution of weight are (likely intentionally) off; most of the weight is concentrated in the head, leaving it off balance, and even more difficult to wield than its impressive weight would already make it.

During the fight against the Original Demon, Rhitta's blade ended up breaking. The missing fragment was later used to create the Sacred Sword Rhitta.

Background

The Divine Axe Rhitta was created by Dubs, the master craftsman of the Giant Clan.[1]

Escanor describes Rhitta being named after a "maiden loved by the Sun."[2]

Abilities

By saying the command "Sacred Treasure Release"じん解放かいほうJingi Kaihō」, Escanor can release all the power he has stored in Rhitta in an instant. The release is accompanied by an incredible wave of light and heat, illuminating the night sky and causing onlookers to mistake it for the sun itself.

Escanor can call Rhitta to himself at will via the simple command "Heed my will"「我が意思に応えよ, Waga ishi ni kotaeyo」, and the axe will travel at incredible speeds through the sky to reach him.[3]

By having enough stored power, Rhitta also allows Escanor to assume his daytime form at night.[4]

  • Charge & Fire充填チャージ放射ファイアChāji & Faia; lit. "Filling & Radiation"」: Rhitta's special ability is to completely absorb and store the enormous amount of heat Escanor radiates from his body during the day. This allows him to release the heat on command and with precision instead of simply burning away everything in his vicinity.[5]

Trivia

  • Rhitta is the third Sacred Treasure to be shown in a flashback.
  • The axe could be named after Rhitta Gawr, a giant defeated by King Arthur in Welsh folklore. However, the axe's name in the series is presumably referring to a "beautiful lady" for unknown reasons like what Escanor said.
  • Despite its large size and the weight of its head, Rhitta is a one-handed weapon.
  • Rhitta is the heaviest of all Sacred Treasures.[6]
  • In the manga, the handle of Rhitta appears mistakenly facing the opposite way at first. In the anime, the handle is correctly facing the direction of the blade.
  • It is implied by Escanor that there is a limit to how much heat and magical power Rhitta can absorb from his body at a given time and will no longer be able to keep his power in check as noon approaches.[7]
  • In Grand Cross, in the Ragnarok arc, Rhitta can apparently absorb sunlight in other dimensions and worlds as long they have a sun.
